Health communicators share message to keep donating blood for the NHS

The main blood donor centres are still open for donations. Travel to the sites to donate is categorised as ‘essential travel’, under the new restrictions in force. (Updated 6 April 2020)

If your local donation centre is not listed on this page, please check with it directly for its current opening. The services listed below are each updating their online information as the situation emerges.

UK Department for Health and Social Care confirmed travel for giving blood and platelets to a NHS centre are permitted within the current coronavirus restrictions (24 March 2020).

Communicators at the UK’s blood and transplants services are promoting the message that blood and platelet donations are essential travel under the category of “medical need and helping a vulnerable person”.

Rules on giving blood during the current coronavirus outbreak in England. The NHS Blood and Transplant Service includes an online search tool where individuals can check whether they can are eligible to donate if they have travelled abroad recently.
